Foliage
The Big Island's $20 million foliage industry is the fastest growing of the island's major agricultural crops. Plants, which grace the interiors of homes and commercial buildings, are the foundation of this industry. Palms, bamboo, and a variety of dracaenas are also shipped to the mainland U.S. The Big Island is the state center for the production of potted plants for landscape use. Hotels and golf course industries have also added to the demand for large plants. The island is also the leader in bonsai planted on lava rocks for indoor use and for international export.
