Council Member Pete Hoffmann

Pete Hoffmann Pete Hoffmann came to the Big Island in 1997 and resides with his wife, Joan, in Waikoloa. He served 28+ years in the US Army - Military Intelligence, retiring in the rank of Colonel as the US Defense Attache in Vienna, Austria in June 1993. During his military career, Pete served for 25 months in Vietnam, spent five years in Thailand, four years in Hawaii during the mid-1970s and three years in Munich, Germany. He is a graduate of the US Army War College and speaks both Thai and German.
Following his retirement from the US Army, he took a job as the ranking American on the staff of a 55 nation peace-keeping organization in Europe (the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe), headquartered in Vienna. His organization was responsible for arranging the first democratic elections in Bosnia and in setting up diplomatic missions to promote democracy in Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Chechnya, among other duties.

Since 'retirement' Pete has been active in a wide variety of community organizations and activities. Before his election, he was the District 9 representative on the County Transportation Commission, served as the Site Coordinator for the Waikoloa Community Learning Center, was a co-founder of the Waikoloa Community Action Group on "Ice", served as a member of the School Community Based Management Council at Waikoloa Elementary School and was a substitute teacher there. He continues to serve as President of the Waikoloa Senior Center, as Chair of the Waikoloa Firewise Committee, as a member of the West Hawaii Advisory Board for the Hawaii Island Food Bank, and is the Editor of the Waikoloa Breeze, a monthly newspaper that services the Waikoloa community. Pete is also a cantor at Sunday services at Annunciation Parish in Waimea and Puako, plays outfield for the Kona Gold Senior Softball Team, attempts to bowl at least once weekly, and recently completed his 24th marathon.

Married for more than 40 years, Joan and Pete have four children (Steve, Mike, Rick and Sharon) and seven grandchildren, all living on the mainland.

Since the beginning of his campaign for office, Pete has stressed the need to pass a General Plan revision as quickly as possible and continue to seek reasonable solutions to the problems associated with the County's lack of infrastructure. He is also committed to find a resolution to the growing affordable housing situation that faces so many of the island's residents and has elected to serve as the Chair of the County's Housing Agency. Finally, Pete will seek to insure that our natural resources and environment receive the necessary protection they require.
