ABOUT THIS BOOK

The 2004 County of Hawaii Data Book is intended to serve as a convenient collection of statistics on the social, economic and political organization of the County. It concentrates local data in a single, convenient reference source and may be used both as a statistical reference and as a guide to other statistical publications and sources.

This publication represents a part of the continuous effort by the Department of Research and Development to provide informational services to County departments, other governmental agencies and the general public. The present edition is the twenty-third to be published by the County of Hawaii.

The publications cited as sources at the end of each table usually contain additional statistical detail and a more comprehensive discussion of relevant definitions and concepts than can be presented here. We encourage users to consult these sources when in need of more detailed information, most of which are available in our Research and Development Library.

Although compilation of the data was done by the Department of Research and Development, many other agencies contributed to this effort. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of the other County departments, as well as the State and Federal agencies who recognize the need for accurate, complete, and up-to-date statistics for the County of Hawaii.

Beginning in 1996, the County of Hawaii Data Book and other County of Hawaii publications and information have been made available at our website: http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/. Data Book tables may be viewed or downloaded from our website and updates to the tables will also be made accessible throughout the year.
