NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH - WORKING WITH OUR POLICE
www.hawaiipolice.com/topPages/cpo.html

An unfortunate consequence of economic instability and downturn is the corresponding increase in local crime.

The answer is not simply to add more Police Officers -- rather, to stem the tide of crime there is something each community can do, proactively, to assist the Police Department in crime prevention and response -- initiate or expand a Neighborhood Watch program in your community.

A Neighborhood Watch organization is a strategy to prevent crime within your neighborhood by teaching citizens to become aware of the daily activities that occur.

By increasing awareness, citizens will know when something out of the ordinary occurs and how to appropriately report the observation to the local Police.

A somewhat similar program -- the Kona Aloha Patrol -- was started along Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona to help the local Police patrol the businesses in the village.

Spearheaded by Destination Kona Coast, the Kona Aloha Patrol involves community volunteers strolling Alii Drive Friday and Saturday evenings from the Kailua Pier to Huggo's.

They do not intervene if trouble starts, but -- like the Neighborhood Watch program -- serve as eyes and ears in telephone contact with the local Police Department. Info on Kona Aloha Patrol:  Jeff Smith 334-1900.

Community Police Officers will assist in establishing neighborhood watch organizations and are available to make crime prevention presentations. If you are interested in starting a neighborhood watch organization, call the Community Police Officer in your district or call Hilo: 961-2350 or Kona: 326-4222.
