IMUA - HAWAI'I ISLAND MOVING FORWARD
The world is changing ... let's work together to
change it for the better. Live Aloha.
Hawai'i County ... a nice place to live.
Hawaii County
representatives are meeting with government agencies, business organizations, community
groups and others to consider and assess the changes that will likely occur, the affects
they will have on peoples' lives and what we can do to improve on our future.
We are working together to
develop and distribute regular 'update' reports on issues, challenges and opportunities
facing Hawai'i County.
These updates are provided
so that residents and businesses can assess impacts and develop action plans in these
changing and challenging times.
We are all in this together
and it is important that we continue to work together to weather these events. We have
experienced downturns and events in the past (recessions, Gulf War, economic stagnation,
natural disasters, etc.) We have weathered those and we will weather this, too.
At times it won't be easy,
but we will get through this. It is critical
that we act now ... proactively ... together. Let us move Hawai'i Island forward,
together.
THINK AND BUY LOCAL - BIG ISLANDERS WORKING TOGETHER
The context here is pretty simple: by
helping each other we will collectively and cumulatively help ourselves ... and our
island's economy and its people.

DEALING WITH CHILDREN DURING DISASTERS
The terrorist attacks and
subsequent military strikes have not spared the children of the nation. They have seen the
terrible television pictures and heard the adults in their lives discussing the tragic
events. Yet many adults don't know how to talk to children about the disaster, or don't
know how to recognize that their children are feeling distress.
FEMA for Kids, the part of the
FEMA web site devoted to children, offers advice on how parents can discuss terrorism to
their children. The site also includes general guidelines about dealing with disasters'
impact on children and an opportunity for schools to submit artwork children have done in
an effort to share their feelings. http://www.fema.gov/kids/
NEIGHBORHOOD
WATCH - WORKING WITH OUR POLICE
An unfortunate consequence of economic instability and
downturn is the corresponding increase in local crime.
The answer is not simply to add more Police Officers.
Rather, to stem the tide of crime, there is something each community can do,
proactively, to assist the Police Department in crime prevention and response -- initiate
or expand a Neighborhood Watch program in your community.
