WHAT IS RSVP?

RSVP, the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program is partially funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service through a Federal grant to the Office of Aging.  The County provides additional funds to enable the Elderly Activities Division of Parks and Recreation to operate RSVP islandwide at its current level of over 1,300 volunteers.

The mission of RSVP is to provide a variety of volunteer opportunities for retired and senior persons aged 55 and older to participate more fully in the life of their community through significant volunteer services.

IS RSVP FOR ME?
If you are 55 or older…and feel you would like to balance your work or leisure with community service that means something special—RSVP is definitely for you.

RSVP volunteers serve through non-profit, private and public community organizations.  There are no education, experience or income requirements.  After volunteers choose an activity that suits their interests, they receive a brief orientation from the RSVP staff and additional instruction, supervision and support at their volunteer sites.

Over half a million people nationwide find fulfillment serving as RSVP volunteers.  Sometimes they elect to continue in their professional fields while others pursue assignments that enable them to fulfill their lifetime fantasies.  Whatever their selection, RSVP volunteers offer a community of talents that enrich their neighborhoods, the people and agencies they serve, and themselves.

THE ADVISORY COUNCIL
The RSVP Advisory Council is a group of persons formally organized for the purpose of advising and supporting the project and staff.  The RSVP Advisory Council assists in co-sponsoring and coordinating annual volunteer recognition events.  They also coordinate fundraisers to lend support to the local project.  Currently, Kealoha Sugiyama of Kohala is the Chairperson, Jay Sasan of Hilo is the Vice-Chairperson, Helen Matsui of Hilo is the Secretary, and Nancy Yamada of Hilo is the Treasurer.  James Tohara of Kona is the Vice-Chairperson and Beverly Aikele of Kona is the Secretary for the West Hawai`i branch of the Advisory Council.

BENEFITS AND ENROLLMENT
Being a RSVP volunteer has its advantages other than having that feeling of self-satisfaction.  The program provides free accident, personal liability, and excess automobile insurance for injuries sustained during volunteer assignments.  These coverages are in excess of and non-contributing with any other valid and collectible insurance the volunteers have.  If you are interested in becoming a RSVP volunteer, please call (808) 961-8730 in Hilo or (808) 322-2427 in Kona.  Exceptions to coverages: Senior Center and Nutrition volunteers will not receive coverage on the excess automobile insurance if they are also participants at their respective centers.
